The nematophagous fungus Pochonia chlamydosporia var. chlamydosporia is among the most extensively researched biological agents for controlling plant (semi-)endo-parasitic nematodes from the genera Globodera, Heterodera, Meloidogyne, Nacobbus, and more recently, Rotylenchulus. This article highlights over three decades of global research on this biological control agent. It delves into various aspects and crucial elements of the intricate plant-fungus-nematode tri-trophic interaction, which must be understood for the effective use of P. chlamydosporia as a biopesticide within an integrated pest management system.

Mode of Action of Fungal and Bacterial Nematicides
Fungi in this category are divided into nematode-trapping, endoparasitic, egg- and female-parasitic, and toxin-producing groups. For instance, nematode-trapping fungi like Monacrosporium megalosporum capture nematodes with adhesive networks of their hyphae. Catenaria anguillulae, an endoparasitic fungus belonging to the Chytridiomycota group, is unique among true (chitin-walled) fungi as it produces motile spores known as zoospores. This fungus often acts as a facultative (non-specific) parasite of nematodes and other microorganisms. Using phase-contrast microscopy, one can observe single and double chains of mature and immature fungal sporangia on infected nematodes.

Nematophagous bacteria are classified by their mechanisms of action into parasitic bacteria and non-parasitic rhizobacteria.
