It is an oxygen-dependent nitrogen-fixing bacterium that can fix nitrogen in the roots, stems, and leaves of sugarcane plants.

It generates growth-enhancing compounds such as Indole Acetic Acid and Gibberellic Acid, which stimulate root development and increase the number of rootlets. This leads to improved absorption of minerals, water, and phosphate solubilization, all of which contribute to enhanced growth and higher sugar recovery in sugarcane. Acetobacter forms a mutualistic relationship with various plants, including sugarcane and coffee, by inhabiting their internal tissues to foster plant growth.
