In commercial forestry, the successful transplantation of crop trees to new sites often depends on the availability of an ectomycorrhizal partner. This requirement is especially critical for trees with specific mycobiont preferences, particularly when planted in areas distant from their natural environments and among unfamiliar fungal species. This need is especially evident in plantations of obligate ectomycorrhizal trees like Eucalyptus and Pinus species.
